AsusTek sweeps Computex design awards

Taiwan’s AsusTek Computer Inc. won a record 17 awards at this year’s Computex d&i Awards, organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said May 5.

The seventh edition of the annual awards, co-organized with Germany-based design body International Forum and seen as a major showcase for innovative products, drew 288 entries from 125 manufacturers, up 21.8 percent and 13.4 percent on the previous year, respectively, TAITRA said.

According to the council, this year’s event saw much greater participation from foreign manufacturers and fiercer competition as a result, with leading lights such as U.S.-based semiconductor maker Qualcomm submitting products for the first time.

An international team of six judges selected this year’s 74 winning entries, which will be announced at Computex Taipei’s curtain-raising media conference June 2, and put on display for the four-day duration of the event in the main hall at Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall.

Hot categories at this year’s awards include wearable devices, mobile communications and Internet equipment. For example, Qualcomm’s Toq Smartwatch allows users to take calls, display calendar appointments, listen to music and use social media, as well as monitoring daily activity levels, to allow a seamless matching of technology and lifestyle.

HTC Corp.’s smartphone New HTC One (M8), launched at the beginning of April, and AsusTek’s ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6 also picked up prizes in the smartphone category.

A stable of other domestic and international names bagged awards, including Acer Inc., Adata Technology Co. Ltd., Asrock Inc., Edimax Technology Co. Ltd., Micro-Star International Co. Ltd., Philips NV, SanDisk Corp., Senao Networks Inc., Silicon Power Computer and Communications Inc. and Thermaltake Technology Co. Ltd. (SDH)
