Today, Google unveiled its new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones, the first devices to come with its latest OS version, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The new handsets are intended to offer the best hardware to showcase the capabilities of the OS - but Marshmallow will also make its way to existing handsets.
Google announced today that it will begin the rollout of Android 6.0 next week, with availability on October 5 for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. However, as you may have noticed, there are several notable omissions from that list.
As first reported by Android Police yesterday, and verified by Ars Technica today, the absence of three devices from that list was no accident: the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 10 will not be upgraded to Marshmallow, and are unlikely to get any further OS updates beyond those already available. Google has officially unveiled the Nexus 6P, the flagship device for Android 6.0 Marshmallow - and with its new range-topper, the company is emphasizing its premium features. Available in three colors - 'Frost White', 'Aluminum' and 'Graphite', the handset is the first Nexus phone with metallic bodywork
Google referred to the new Nexus 5X - built by LG - as a spiritual successor to the earlier Nexus 5 (which was developed by the same manufacturer) and offered high-end performance at relatively low cost.
Here are the device's official key specs:
5.2-inch LCD with Full HD (1920x1080px) resolution
12.3MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, infrared-assisted autofocus and 4K video recording
5MP front-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture
Fingerprint sensor
microUSB Type-C connector
Dual-front speakers
2700mAh battery
147 x 72.6 x 7.9mm; 136g
Available in black, white and 'ice blue', pre-orders for the Nexus 5X are open now at the Google Store, priced at $379 for the 16GB model, and $429 for the 32GB variant. All devices purchased at the Google Store are unlocked, and able to connect to major US and international networks.
However, the bad news - particularly given the relatively limited storage on the device - is that the Nexus 5X doesn't have a microSD slot.
All Nexus devices sold at the Google Store will include a free 90-day subscription to Google Play Music, and a $50 Play Store credit (in the US). A new 'Nexus Protect' program is also available with the 5X priced at $69, which includes two years of coverage for mechanical breakdown, and two years of protection from accidental damage, along with 'as early as next business day' replacement.
The device has a 5.7-inch display, but Google says the slim bezels make the device roughly the same size as 5.5-inch devices. Here are the handset's official specs:
5.7-inch AMOLED screen with Quad HD (2560x1440px) resolution
64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor
3GB RAM
32GB / 64GB / 128GB storage options
12.3MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, infrared-assisted autofocus and 4K video recording
8MP front-facing camera
microUSB Type-C connector
Fingerprint sensor
Dual-front speakers
3450mAh battery
159.4 x 77.8 x 7.3mm; 178g
Google also says that the 6P features "the best camera we've ever put in a Nexus device" - but the bad news (for some users) is that the new handset doesn't include a microSD card slot.
Pre-orders will open today in the US, UK, Ireland and Japan, priced at:
32GB: $499
64GB: $549
128GB: $649

Along with the Nexus 6P, Google is also expected to unveil the Nexus 5X, which is a slightly smaller device that will be produced by LG. The purported specs of this device include:
